Bocca di Leone
Embroidery in collaboration with Morgan Elvington Walker’s artwork ‘Bocca di Leone’, using ceramic threads on a cotton base, mounted onto handmade paper. This collaboration explores the translation of Morgan’s designs into stitch.
The “pokes” began in friend Louisa’s collage class, where Morgan first noticed the unexpected beauty that came from threading paper. Delicate marks left on the reverse side sparked a tactile curiosity she’s been exploring ever since.
This collection was inspired by the symmetry Morgan kept noticing across England and Italy, with repeating patterns in gardens, architecture and design. One piece nearly didn’t make it; at one point she feared it was ruined. But she pushed through and completed it just in time for her show.
While searching for a flower to title the work, she landed on the snapdragon, a symbol of resilience known for thriving in difficult conditions. It’s Italian name, Bocca di Leone, offered a quiet nod to her father, Leo. In that moment, it felt like a gentle “well done” from him, one that made her smile, cry, and miss him a little more.
