Mia Sylvia x Sow Studio

We recently completed a project with Mia Sylvia and her team, where we embroidered 40 metres of muslin fabric to be hung at a celebration marking 11 years of Larry Walshe Studio.

The inspiration began with anthuriums — we were drawn to their sculptural shapes and textures and wanted to reflect this in our embroidery. Starting with a series of observational drawings, we worked closely with the team to develop a design that felt fluid, organic and in tune with the feel of the event.

We explored a few different techniques, but eventually settled on a running stitch that we manipulated to create a hand-stitched effect with a longer stitch length. This simple yet effective approach allowed the embroidery to hold its own across a large stretch of fabric, creating a soft, textural detail that complemented the overall installation.

It was such a pleasure to be involved in this special project and see our work come to life in such a beautiful setting.
